1998 dodge ram 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. With this year's introduction of a 4-door extended-cab pickup truck, dodge has fired yet another shot across the bow of ford, chevy and gmc, which offer only three doors on their extended-cabs. The new dodge quad cab, as it is called, is an option on all 1500 and 2500 extended cab trucks and it's standard on the big 3500 models. that one major product advantage is backed up by a host of other significant changes for 1998 from one end of the ram family to the other. Interiors have been given a thorough makeover for the new year. Like all of the domestic pickups, the dodge ram is available in three load ratings: 1500, 2500, and 3500. Three engines are available: a 3. 9-liter v6, 5. 2-liter v8, 5. 9-liter v8 engines, 8. 0-liter v10 and a cummins 5. 9-liter inline 6-cylinder diesel. Every engine comes with a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Output from the 5. 2-liter v8 has been raised from 220 to 230 horsepower and it earns an epa city/highway rating of 14/19 mpg when fitted with the 5-speed manual and two-wheel drive. Power from the 5. 9-liter v8 has been increased from 235 to 245 horsepower, with a jump in torque to 335 pound-feet; a two-wheel-drive automatic gets 13/17 mpg. the cummins turbodiesel puts out 215 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of trailer-pulling torque. The v10 gasoline engine is rated at 300 tire-smoking horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. The 3. 9-liter v6 is unchanged with 175 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque and fuel economy ratings of 15/19. standard, club cab and quad cab bodies are available in lt, laramie slt, and sst trim levels. Regular-length beds are 6 1/2 feet long, optional long beds are 8 feet long. improvements for 1998 include a new keyless remote entry system, an upgraded base sound system, a new cassette and cd sound system option, leather seat availability on slt versions, and a new sport plus package with 17-inch wheels and tires, suspension upgrades and 5. 9-liter v8 with sport exhausts. A number of under-the-skin upgrades have been made, including electrocoated frame paint, and new exterior and new interior colors are available. dodge says the new quad cab design is as strong as a conventional pickup body shell even though it does not have a pillar between the doors. To improve structural rigidity, dodge engineers designed a beam that runs crossways under the truck and strengthened the a and c pillars. The absence of a b-pillar makes it much easier to get in or out of the rear seat; it also makes it much easier to stick something behind the front seats. This includes a new steering wheel design, a new set of reduced-force air bags, with a lockout for the passenger bag, a gaping storage hole, an extra power point, and new cupholders that will handle anything. in order to get rid of a potentially messy array of dangling seat belts in the wide-open quad cab doorway, the designers have integrated the front seat belts into the seats themselves on all rams. The console has also been redesigned. The front seat in all rams is divided 40/20/40, with a huge fold-down central section that doubles as armrest and writing table. There's a substantial storage box inside the armrest portion with divided spaces for coins, cassettes, maps or even a laptop computer. the rear seat in the quad cab is the same seat used in the conventional extended cab version of the truck. It's handy for children, pets and petite adults, but it is not comfortable for adults on long trips. The rear seat is fitted with two shoulder belts and one lap belt. Driving it made us think of the old muscle car drag racing days on woodward avenue in detroit. It's also a really flexible, driveable combination in off-road situations, much more so than the automatic. Rear suspension is a conventional live axle with leaf springs designed to carry heavy loads. We found the suspension delightfully smooth and supple on the street, aided by those big fat goodyear rt/s tires. But the body is so high off the ground that some passengers--particularly females--had a great deal of entry/exit difficulty even with a grab bar on the a-pillar. one thing we didn't like about the ram's dynamics last year was the steering, which was light enough and quick enough, but had an enormous dead space on center, and seemed to require constant left-right adjustments to stay straight ahead. That has been fixed this year with a new steering gear setup and new steering geometry, and the feel of the truck is much more precise than earlier models. braking, with discs in front, drums in rear, was exemplary. 2008 dodge ram 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Never before have trucks been more capable for hauling and towing nor more competent at coddling passengers. There is no mistaking a ford f-150 for a nissan titan or a toyota tundra, nor even confusing a chevy silverado with a gmc sierra. Any one of them would be a good choice from a consumer's point of view. but it was the ram that started the high-style-truck trend back in 1994 when dodge took a risk with a bold, retro big-rig design. That truck transformed ram from a bit player with staid styling to a big-stage event. The dodge ram has run with the big boys ever since, sometimes leading, sometimes trailing, but always solidly on the bill. Whether the '08 ram is merely as good as the trucks listed above, or somewhat better, is more a matter of personal preference than anything else. the dodge ram 1500 light-duty pickups are smooth and refined. Their cabs are comfortable and convenient, among the roomiest in their respective classes. The quad cab is handy for hauling friends and family but even the regular cab is roomy. arguably, the ram is the best-looking truck on the market. Its styling is bold and handsome, even more so in its latest incarnation. ram was extensively re-engineered for 2006, with a new hydroformed frame that's boxed its full length; plus new suspension and body mounts that improved ride, handling, and quietness. That same year, ram was modestly restyled inside and out. the 2008 model year brings new life to the 4. 7-liter v8, with horsepower up 31 percent to 310 hp and torque up 10 percent to 330 pound-feet. Other updates to the 2008 dodge ram lineup include simpler maintenance intervals, trailer sway control added to the optional stability system, available tire pressure monitors, new steering hardware for 4wds, dark maple woodgrain trim on laramie, and two new colors right out of the muscle car age: sunburst orange and detonator yellow. ram's optional hemi engine delivers power and efficiency. The switchover is seamless, and fuel economy is improved by as much as 20 percent, says dodge. Step on the gas, however, and the cylinders reawaken, ready to deliver the 345 peak ponies that make the hemi-powered ram one of the most exciting light-duty pickups on the market. Options parallel those on the st, although the stx is the trim level for the trx4 off-road package. slt comes standard with the 4. 7-liter flex-fuel v8, six-disc cd changer, carpeting, power windows/door locks/heated mirrors, overhead console with mini-trip computer and compass, cruise control, and 17-inch painted aluminum wheels. Options include a navigation system, sirius satellite radio, uconnect bluetooth hands-free wireless communication, 5. 7 v8, on-demand 4wd, bucket seats, six-way power driver seat and 20-inch aluminum wheels. A power sunroof and a rear-seat dvd entertainment system are available for slt quad cabs. the sport group for the slt comes with the hemi engine and five-speed automatic transmission, unique cloth-faced bucket seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, body-color grille and bumper fascia, fog lamps, and 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels. Options are the same as for the slt. laramie is the luxury trim level, offered only as quad cab automatic. Leather seats are standard, with a heated, split 40/20/40 bench up front and power adjustment for the driver. Options include navigation, power sunroof, adjustable pedals, and electronic upgrades. safety features include optional side-curtain airbags designed to provide head protection in a side impact or rollover. We recommend getting them; head injuries are the leading cause of death in side impacts. An electronic stability program (esp) is optional. walkaroundthe 2008 dodge ram presents a bold, distinctive appearance with its big horse-collar grille and freightliner fenders. The concept dates back a dozen years, but it received a major redesign for 2002 and a makeover for 2006. The headlamps cut back deeper into the fenders, and a flattened front bumper on sport and laramie emphasizes ram's big-rig image. A slot in the front bumper aids engine cooling and air conditioner performance. ram's trademark front grille remains one of the most instantly recognizable front ends on the road. A thick band of chrome surrounds the grille on st, slt and laramie; the band is body color on sport models. The broad, sloping hood has a pronounced crown that falls over the sides to the prominent front fenders, helpful for clearance, less so for seeing edges in tight quarters. a fast, raked-back windshield enhances aerodynamics and water management, while gracefully blending modern sleekness with ram's retro lower body. The leading edge of the front door overlaps the a-pillar, creating a smooth transition from the front of the cab to the side. Everything is smooth and integrated. The big side mirrors, great for visibility, are mounted on platforms to minimize wind noise, and a channel has been specially designed to keep water off of the mirrors. That seems high when trying to heave heavy gear aboard. All beds are fitted with boat cleats designed to handle 1,000 pounds each. ordering the long bed adds 20 inches to the wheelbase of a dodge ram. And a quad cab wheelbase is 20 inches longer than a regular cab. So a quad cab long bed has 40 more inches of wheelbase than a regular cab short bed. Long-bed rams also get a bigger fuel tank, 35 gallons in place of the standard 26 gallons; some of the latter offer a 34-gallon option. interiorthe dodge ram is among the roomiest of the full-size pickups, and its cab is a pleasant place to be. It sacrifices a few inches of bed space for interior space. regular cab and quad cab versions offer identical roominess in the front seats. Standard front seating in the ram is a bench split 40/20/40. The narrow center section features a large fold-down armrest with a compartment big enough to hold a laptop. we've found both the cloth and the leather seats comfortable. The driving position is good, with good visibility in all directions, though the aerodynamic front end makes it impossible to see the front corners. Big mirrors on the ram make it easy to see what's behind. we found the bucket seats in the sport version comfortable and supportive and the sporty fabric looks durable. The latest fabrics, first introduced with the 2007 models, are designed to be more stain and odor-resistant than before, while also reducing static cling. Laramie models get silver trim adorning the door panels and instrument bezels. Laramie comes with distinctive leather trim, with higher-contrast color seat inserts. the ram interior shows attention to details that add utility and convenience. The big fold-down center armrest/console comes with adjustable dividers and a power outlet. A hook on the passenger-side floor well is provided for securing a plastic grocery bag or anything else with suitable handles. premium amenities such as the full-screen gps navigation radio and bluetooth hands-free communications are available, along with a rear-seat dvd system for quad cabs. We found the navigation radio to be a nice design and relatively easy to operate; these systems are getting better all the time and the latest chrysler group's systems work quite well. overall, the center dash is a paradigm of convenience. Large heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (hvac) buttons can be operated while wearing gloves. A textured fabric is used for trim around the audio and hvac controls that gives the center dash a nice look and feel.

The hood carries out to the fenders rather than sloping off like the old one, and combined with the deep air dam and bodywork gives it a much more wagon-like proportion in side view. dodge durango falls right in the middle of the three-row mix of suvs for outside dimensions, and the long rear side doors look even longer because they have no fixed quarter window within. It's a fairly subtle shape with chrome down low on most models, sprinkled about more on fancy ones. Windows are neither hummer-slit nor overly generous, and the apparent proportions vary significantly with paint color. the rear end of the 2011 durango is sloped more than the previous durango, not as upright as the ultra-practical pilot nor as fastback as others. Rear lighting is simple, though we found them too similar to those on the all-new 2011 jeep grand cherokee. Like the wheel-well openings, the lower edges all around the perimeter are dark plastic to avoid scuffing and rock chips. a cargo hatch, powered on some models, does not open the glass separately, not such a big deal with pushbutton access. Behind the fun tab of the option book is the road/track performance group, what some who remember the ultimate stealth muscle car of the 1960s might call the road runner edition, as in, more go, less show: unique aluminum wheels with black accents, sportier steering, self-leveling shocks, sport seats, performance suspension and, the kicker piece, a tweaked v8 making 350 horsepower 1600). safety features that come standard on all charger models include antilock brakes, all-speed. walkaroundin many ways, the newest charger isn't much sleeker, or more aerodynamic than the original. Knocked off from the 1966 dodge coronet, and despite its fastback, two-door hardtop styling, that charger was somewhat blocky, with squared-off front end, superficially sculpted slab sides and equally vertical backside. There was the barest hint of a so-called coke bottle look, with the body sides slightly pinched in about where there would have been a b-pillar. Not until the 1968 model year was any attention paid to moving the car rapidly through the air with minimal disturbance. The 2006 charger starts at much the same place on the automotive styling evolutionary curve. and for good reason. The same design team that parented the chrysler 300 and dodge magnum birthed this new charger. The charger is built on the same platform as those two, but is three inches longer overall. The charger reportedly was planned all along to be a sedan version of the magnum. with this legacy, it's no surprise that there's an uprightness to the charger's silhouette, regardless of viewing angle. The front end, in fact, tilts forward, as if it's leaning into the wind, specifically to recall the brutish, pre-aero-age styling of its muscle car era namesake. The trademark dodge crosshairs, chromed on the sxt and r/t, body-color in the se and srt8 and flat black on the daytona, dominate the front end. Compound halogen headlights peer out under hooded, almost scowling brows. A thin, trifurcated air intake slices across the lower portion of the front bumper, beneath which the daytona and srt8 wear a trim, flat-black chip spoiler. Fog lamps on the sxt and higher models fill small, sculpted insets at the lower corners. from the side, the demi-fastback roofline and glasshouse look more grafted onto the somewhat fulsome body than a natural extension of the overall styling theme, very much as if the designer were trying to make a sedan look like a coupe. The beltline arcs softly back from a slight droop over the headlights to about midway in the rear side window, then kicks up over the rear quarter panel, visually bulking up the car's already hefty haunches. Flip-up, top-hinged door handles are flush mounted but operate sufficiently friendly to pose no major threats to fingernails. the rear perspective shows a tall, almost vertical backside, with large taillights draped over the upper corners. A modest, kamm-like lip stretches across the trailing edge of an expansive trunk lid, atop which sits a lift-suppressing spoiler on the daytona and srt8. A recess in the bumper holds the license plate. On the se and sxt a single exhaust tip exits beneath the right-hand side, while the v8-powered models sport chrome-tipped, muscle car-idiom, dual exhausts. the charger's styling is loosely reflected on nascar's nextel cup cars, primarily seen in the crosshair grille and the painted-on taillights. interiormuch of what holds about the charger's exterior carries over to its interior, only more so. Where the outside only suggests other chrysler and dodge cars, the inside looks as if it's been lifted, locks, steering column and bucket seats from the magnum, with a fixture and feature here and there brought over from a dakota or a durango. the dash and instrument cluster is identical to the magnum's, with the minor exception of surface trims on the center stack and center console, and when ordered on the r/t, the navigation display. This isn't to complain, but to compliment, as the arrangement is pleasantly informative. From the driver's seat, easily scanned, large, round speedometer and tachometer share the top half of the steering wheel opening, with fuel and coolant temperature gauges down in the left and right corners, respectively. The steering wheel, too, comes directly from the magnum. Air conditioning registers fill the top of the center stack, above the stereo/navigation display, with the climat.
